Will you be looking for something for your kids to do when it gets to the late May Half-Term Holiday? There are several alternatives here in the festival programme, including the Family Adventure Drop-In planned by the 4th Newcastle Scouts on Bank Holiday, 25 May (10 am – 1 pm). This will be held in the Jesmond Parish Church Halls, Eskdale Terrace.
The Friends of Jesmond Dene have informed us that their walk on 30 May is now fully booked. There are places available on most of the other guided walks mentioned in the festival programme, but our advice is to book up as soon as possible. For example we understand that there are still places available on the walks in Jesmond Old Cemetery and St Andrew’s Cemetery.
Former pupils of Central High School will be most welcome at Pegasus Assembly, Eskdale Terrace (the new building on the site where Central High once stood) at 11:00 am on Tuesday 12 May. Refreshments will be available and there will be a short talk by Fiona Clarke, herself a former pupil. Fiona would be delighted to hear memories from other former pupils, whether or not you can attend on 12 May. For further information contact fionakclarke@yahoo.co.uk .
If you are a Gilbert and Sullivan fan, make a note in your diary now! On Tuesday 19 May Jesmond Choral Group will be joined by soloists from Tynemouth Gilbert and Sullivan Society in a free concert performance of “The Mikado”, starting at 7:30 pm in Jesmond United Reformed Church, Burdon Terrace. The group will be conducted by Jonathan Scott and accompanied by Julia Kennard. Sure to be a highlight of this year’s Jesmond Community Festival!
Holy Name parish in Jesmond is delighted to welcome papal biographer, journalist and commentator Dr Austen Ivereigh to give its annual public lecture in the church on North Jesmond Avenue on Saturday 16 May, at 11 am, as part of this year’s Jesmond Community Festival.
Dr Ivereigh is travelling from his home in Herefordshire to Tyneside to give the lecture “From Francis to Leo: The Catholic Church in a Change of Era.”
When Pope Francis died a year ago, the cardinals elected a new pope who would continue and deepen his reform, which they said was key to evangelizing today’s world. This is what Francis and now Leo call “the change of an era” – a new apostolic age.
Dr Ivereigh is Fellow in Contemporary Church History at Campion Hall, University of Oxford. There will be a pop up shop and book signing after the lecture, while parish volunteers serve cold drinks.
