2023 Jesmond Community Festival

Jesmond community organisations met on 22 November 2022 in Jesmond Library to begin planning a 2023 Jesmond Community Festival, which is expected to start on Saturday 6 May and last until Sunday 4 June. Any organisation wishing to take part is asked to email info@jesmondfestival.org.uk as soon as possible.

The Royal Route

The Royal Route

Some of the most popular events in this year’s Jesmond Community Festival were the Guided Walks. A new event being organised by the Friends of Jesmond Dene should therefore be very popular!
It’s on 20 August, starting at 11:00am and ending about 1:00pm. The walk will follow the route taken by the Prince and Princess of Wales on this day in 1884, when they officially opened Heaton Park and Jesmond Dene. Suggested donation £5; pay on the day. There is a limit on places so please book via friends.of.jesmond.dene@gmail.com as soon as possible.
A Song for the Orchard

A Song for the Orchard

The result of the “Song for the Orchard” competition have been announced by Jesmond Community Orchard.
The overall winners were Jennie Steele and Hal Lockwood for “A Song for the Orchard”. The runner up is Garry Jenkins with “Wassail we all wassail”, while third and fourth were Aidan Tate and Crispin Welby with “Damson in Distress” and “Song to the tune of Waltzing Matilda” respectively.
It is planned that the winning songs will be performed at next year’s Wassailing event in the Orchard.
Holy Trinity Church Centenary Exhibition

Holy Trinity Church Centenary Exhibition

The 2022 Jesmond Community Festival is now largely finished, and what a success it has been! But a number of the festival events are continuing, in one way or another.

One example is the Centenary Exhibition at Holy Trinity Church in Churchill Gardens NE2 2HB, which continues until September. Admission is free; the display is in the Church, and is open to the public on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 10am to 1pm, and on Sundays from 1pm to 3pm.

The exhibition will interest anyone interested in the history of this part of Jesmond, and provides an opportunity to see a series of stunning stained-glass windows, and fine oak carving by Ralph Hedley and Percy Appleby. The Grade 2* listed building was consecrated as a war memorial church in September 1922, and the exhibition also provides a fascinating insight into the lives of some of the church members who make up the congregation.
